Circularity in action: How to overcome the barriers to scale in the EU and the UK
According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, by 2040 a circular economy for packaging has the potential to reduce GHG emissions by 25% and create 700,000 net additional jobs. Sounds great in theory. But with 91 percent of packaging waste sent to the landfills and/or released in the environment, we have a long way to go.
In this session, we’ll assess the solutions that exist to overcome the barriers and pitfalls to true, scalable circularity. We will take a deep dive into the nuances of circular packaging and assess practical examples of circular approaches in action.
Session objectives:
- Understand the ‘rules’ of closed-loop packaging design
- Define the business case for circular models and determine what’s needed to achieve cost competitiveness
- Provide practical examples and clear lessons learned from the implementation of circular approaches
- Understand the true scalability of secondary markets vs recycling infrastructure
